Hudson Super Six (1917)

  • Hudson Super Six - Historical Information
We only had a few contemporary photographs to work from, but using our contacts, found more as the project evolved.
  • Hudson on board track
This picture was large format and a great help. The body of the Hudson was offset and more difficult to re-create than anticipated.
  • Old tech meets new tech
3D scanning a classic car chassis to reverse engineer the body. The picture does not show the inches of snow outside....but we got there.
  • Classic car chassis scanned in 3D
Another way of looking at the 3D scan data obtained from the Hudson Super Six chassis.
  • Buck visualized with a 3D rendering
Prior to manufacture 3D renderings were created to visualize how the buck would look in real life.
  • 3D printed model of the Hudson Super Six
Shown as much to show our approach to cost. Most economical 3D material used (hence finish) as model was a test mock up.
  • The body buck lives!
Section body buck fitted to Hudson chassis.
  • Aluminium body takes shape
The aluminium body takes shape. Buck being used shown behind body.

Design brief

Having acquired the chassis and running gear for this 1917 American racer, our client needed the body design to be re-created and asked us to achieve this goal.

Prior to starting, we were given a number of pictures of the vehicle. A little known, but important, part of our work is that we are good at locating information previously unknown to the client. In this case, we managed to find a number of important photographs, an article containing technical information and pictures as well as making contact with a gentleman knowledgeable about the car (who lived in the United States) who kindly sent further pictures. In fact the client emailed stating that we were like “Hercule Poirot”….but quicker!

“I’m quite delighted with the finished buck…………. that is my solid opinion” Hudson client
